Enjoy a wonderful day at Bwlch Nant yr Arian, up in the Cambrian Mountains to see the Red Kites being fed. This is a great day out for the family at any time of year. It is a beautiful area, riddled with paths for walkers and trails for cyclists, along with adventure play areas for the children. It’s time to enjoy kite flying.
The kites are fed daily, 2pm in the winter and 3pm in the summer, every day of the year, including Christmas Day. Sometimes as many as 150 kites come for their free meal and even more can be seen in the winter months, flying in from a 10 mile radius. They are fed off-cuts of beef from a local butcher and they get through about 10kg a day. There is a white kite that can be seen sometimes, although it wasn’t hungry enough to visit when we were there!
It is amazing to watch them circling overhead, gathering more and more in number as time approaches. When the hour arrives, the meat is scattered out onto a grassy feeding area on the lakeside.
It is amazing how these kites have come back in abundance and are positively thriving now. We often see them down here in West Wales, circling in the thermals. When they glide low overhead they are a truly impressive sight.
