Tucked within the Castle grounds, the East Wing is a beautiful self-catering retreat that blends elegant comfort with original medieval features. This fabulous property feels both refined and welcoming—from the ancient slate floors underfoot to the curved stone tower walls you pass on the stairs. Pull open a wooden shutter and you might just catch a glimpse of the battlements outside your sash window.
Cardigan Castle holds a special place in Welsh history—it’s thought to be the first stone castle built by a Welshman. In 1176, Lord Rhys ap Gruffydd threw a legendary celebration to mark its completion, inviting poets, musicians and performers from far and wide. That gathering became the first-ever Eisteddfod, which makes this site both unique and very special.
Guests staying at the Castle accommodation enjoy complimentary access to the historic grounds and any events or performances happening during their visit. You can even sit in the Eisteddfod Chair or take a quiet moment in the gardens once the day visitors have left.
Cardigan itself is full of charm, with a theatre, galleries, independent shops, and some great places to eat and drink—including the Castle’s own restaurant, ‘1176’. Spend your days exploring the coast and countryside of Cardigan Bay, then return for a sunset drink in the gardens with the Castle as your backdrop.
